Planning My Music Video
To plan my music video, I listened to the song carefully and noted the timings, lyrics and structure (intro, verses, chorus and bridge). This helped me decide what types of visual elements, camera shots and editing techniques I want to use during each part of the song. Because “Riptide” has a calm sound and relaxed rhythm, I decided that the video will be filmed mainly at the beach, using natural lighting.
Intro (0:00 – 0:12)
At the beginning of the song, I plan to start with establishing shots of the beach to introduce the setting. These will be wide shots showing the ocean, waves and coastline. I want to include slow camera movement, such as a gentle pan across the water or a slow tilt from the sand up to the horizon. I may also use a soft fade-in transition to start the video smoothly.
Verse 1 (0:13 – 0:35)
During the first verse, I will introduce the main character. The character will be shown walking alone along the beach, which reflects the emotional tone of the song. I plan to use a long shot of the character walking along the shoreline and a tracking shot from behind following their movement. I could also include close-up shots of feet walking in the sand or hands touching the water to add visual detail.
Pre-Chorus (0:36 – 0:48)
In the pre-chorus, I will continue focusing only on the main character, rather than introducing another person. This keeps the story simple and more reflective. The character could be shown using a digital camera, trying to capture these relaxing moments and the beautiful views.
I plan to include wide shots of the character standing near the water with the ocean in the background. I could also use slow motion shots of the waves moving toward the shore, which would visually represent the idea of the “riptide”. These shots would help connect the visuals to the theme of the song. The camera movement would remain slow and smooth, maintaining the calm atmosphere of the music video.
Chorus (0:49 – 1:10)
During the chorus, the focus will shift more to the character. The main character might be watching the deep waters while contemplating on life and showing nostalgic emotions. I plan to use medium shots and close-ups to show facial expressions. A slow push-in shot (zoom) could highlight the main character’s feelings. The editing may become slightly faster here to match the stronger rhythm of the chorus.
Verse 2 (1:11 – 1:35)
In the second verse, I will continue to develop the atmosphere and setting. I want to include wide cinematic shots of the beach and ocean, possibly showing the character dancing and enjoying herself.
Bridge (2:11 – 2:30)
The bridge of the song is slightly more emotional, so I would focus more on close-up shots and slower camera movement. This section could show the main character sitting down on the sand, simply watching the sunset or reading.
Final Chorus and Outro (2:31 – End)
In the final chorus, the story would reach its resolution. The female would walk away from the beach as walking away from her memories, in a peaceful tone. I would use wide shots showing the ocean and sunset to create a beautiful ending.
