Flatplans

Before jumping into the actual design of my magazine, I drew flatplans for the cover, table of contents, and feature article. Flatplans work like a storyboard in film: they’re a quick sketch of where every element – masthead, images, headlines, pull-quotes, captions and text columns – will sit on the page.
Doing this stage first helped me visualise the rhythm of the magazine, test different layouts without spending time on full designs, and make sure all the pages feel consistent with the brand of Global Lens. It also allowed me to think about how a reader’s eye will move through the page, where the main focus points are, and how much space to allocate for text versus visuals.
Below are my flatplans, which show the planned structure and flow of the cover, table of contents and feature article for this issue of Global Lens. These will guide me as I build the real pages later on.
